Power & Utilities Manager
Position Overview:
The Power & Utilities Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and long-term strategic direction of Catawba's Power and Recovery assets. This role ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of critical infrastructure, including boilers, turbines, and environmental systems, while driving performance improvements, managing budgets, and developing a high-performing team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership and direction for the operation of evaporators, recovery boilers, power boilers, turbine generators, bark handling systems, and wastewater treatment facilities.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and environmental standards, maintaining a culture of safety and accountability.
- Manage departmental budgets and financial performance, ensuring cost-effective operations while meeting production goals.
- Develop and execute capital projects and long-term improvement plans to enhance facility reliability and efficiency.
- Mentor and develop salaried leaders and union personnel, fostering a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Communicate organizational goals, strategies, and performance expectations clearly and effectively to all team members.
Leadership & Team Development:
- Directly supervise assistant superintendents and front-line supervisors within the Power & Utilities department.
- Strengthen the organization by aligning team capabilities with current and future operational needs.
- Facilitate knowledge transfer and leadership development to prepare staff for future growth and advancement opportunities.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or Pulp & Paper Engineering.
- A minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in power generation, recovery operations, and turbine systems.
- Proven expertise in managing equipment shutdowns, startups, and large-scale outages.
- Skilled at leading diverse teams in a unionized environment, with a focus on training, development, and performance management.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver results, drive organizational change, and uphold company values.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities and meet strategic objectives.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills; able to build trust, recognize achievements, and influence across all levels.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (including MS Project) and familiar with analytical tools such as PI ProcessBook and Proficy.
- Innovative mindset with a proactive, entrepreneurial approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.
