Controls Engineer Specialist - Automation & Manufacturing

Salary: $85,000-$125,000+ Bonus


Location: Rockford, IL | 🕘 Shift: 1st Shift, Monday-Friday

An industry-leading global manufacturer is seeking a Controls Engineer Specialist to support automation innovation at its U.S.-based facility. With a focus on modernizing production, launching new lines, and enhancing equipment reliability, this role offers the chance to work with cutting-edge control technologies in a fast-paced, people-first environment.

What You'll Do

As a Controls Engineer Specialist, you'll play a key role in driving automation improvements and maintaining production systems. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Programming and troubleshooting Rockwell (PLC-5, SLC500, ControlLogix, CompactLogix) and Siemens PLCs

  • Developing and supporting HMI systems (PanelView, Siemens, Wonderware)

  • Setting up and maintaining VFDs and industrial safety controllers (Pilz, Sick, GuardMaster)

  • Designing/updating electrical controls, schematics, and layouts using AutoCAD

  • Providing hands-on support for system troubleshooting and start-ups

  • Researching and integrating new technologies into existing infrastructure

  • Documenting system changes and training operators and maintenance personnel

  • Supporting electrical installations, product launches, and line upgrades

  • Performing regular backups of PLC, HMI, and VFD data to the LAN

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, or related field (or equivalent experience)

  • Strong proficiency in PLC and HMI programming (Rockwell, Siemens)

  • Experience working with VFDs, safety systems, and industrial networks

  • Advanced knowledge of AutoCAD for electrical control design

  • A problem-solving mindset and ability to simplify and optimize complex systems

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work with cross-functional teams

  • Self-starter mentality with a proactive approach to continuous improvement
