We are looking for a dynamic and people-focused individual to champion HSES (Health, Safety, Environment, and Security) initiatives within our California operations. This role involves leading the charge in creating, implementing, and enhancing HSES policies and practices, ensuring that HSES remains our top priority. The successful candidate will oversee HSES at our manufacturing and R&D site, guiding local HSES specialists to achieve our goals.
Responsibilities:
- Offer expert support for ongoing HSES projects, troubleshooting issues, conducting site inspections and audits, and investigating incidents.
- Develop a robust HSES communication strategy to highlight priorities and performance.
- Collaborate with Operations, R&D, Engineering, and other departments to ensure safe and compliant operations.
- Lead and participate in experimental planning, new chemical assessments, job safety analyses, process hazard analyses, and pre-startup safety reviews, promoting safer technology and engineering solutions.
- Maintain and organize HSES performance data, compliance records, policies, and procedures, ensuring critical information is backed up electronically.
- Work closely with R&D and production teams on new chemical process introductions and scale-ups.
- Partner with other R&D sites to identify shared opportunities and leverage collective learning.
- Establish and implement best practice systems for an effective HSES program, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and conducting trend analysis.
- Stay informed about local, state, and federal regulations and relevant developments.
- Build and maintain relationships with local agencies, including Community Advisory Panels, security, and emergency responders.
- Collaborate with HSES technical experts to implement local improvements and meet requirements.
- Manage and enhance local site security measures.
- Engage employees in developing HSES programs, processes, and performance metrics.
- Track the completion of action items from HSES audits, inspections, and incident investigations.
- Provide on-the-ground HSES coaching and recognition.
- Support the implementation and responsibilities of the HSES team.
- Mentor and develop the HSES specialist team, helping them reach their full potential.
- Complete all assigned training successfully.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental or Occupational Safety, or equivalent work experience with at least 3 years of relevant HSES experience in chemical manufacturing or high-hazard environments, OR an Associate's degree with 5 years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated passion for HSES and a strong commitment to safety.

- Strong project management skills, including the ability to develop and implement HSES processes.
- Experience in root cause investigation and the ability to drive changes to prevent recurrence.

- Strong leadership skills with a focus on people and engagement.
- Proactive, assertive, and able to work with urgency.
- Ability to plan, prioritize, and meet deadlines under pressure.

- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
