Instrumentation Engineer

Basic Function

Provide technical support to instrumentation activities within HDPE and HDA plant operations to improve reliability and ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and loss control standards. Deliver expert-level instrument and electrical guidance rooted in sound engineering principles to maintain a safe and efficient work environment for all plant personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with all plant safety policies including Lock-Out / Tag-Out (LOTO), hot work, fall protection, confined space, lifting/rigging, line break, and traffic safety.

  • Participate in overtime and alternative shift schedules as necessary.

  • Respond to plant emergencies on a 24/7 basis, including nights, weekends, and holidays, while on-call.

  • Complete all assigned training and field observations by the deadline.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by recommending long-term solutions to reduce costs, improve reliability, and strengthen safety performance.

  • Read and interpret PFDs and P&IDs.

  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance teams, engineering, procurement, and contractors.

  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Technical Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance and technical support to the I&E Supervisor, Planner, technicians, analyzer technicians, and DCS specialists.

  • Evaluate plant system performance and recommend enhancements related to operation, maintenance, or testing.

  • Optimize preventive maintenance strategies and instrument/analyzer reliability programs.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve instrumentation issues in collaboration with operations.

  • Support technician development with a focus on controls and instrumentation.

  • Lead root cause investigations and implement corrective actions for instrument/control failures.

  • Contribute to the design, justification, and installation of capital projects.

  • Review and prepare engineering documentation such as data sheets, loop drawings, isometrics, calculations, and technical specifications.

  • Conduct field investigations and inspections to provide maintenance solutions.

  • Assist with outage planning and execution.

  • Oversee vendor-related repairs and field work.

  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate equipment documentation.

Job-Specific Tasks

  • Field troubleshooting, including outdoor work in varying weather conditions.

  • Adapt to urgent and dynamic workflows.

  • Make timely decisions or escalate issues as needed.

  • Specify new equipment, coordinate repairs, engage vendors, and source materials using technical and historical data.

Qualifications / Experience Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Controls/Automation Engineering (other technical degrees considered based on experience).

  • 2+ years of experience in a plant environment.

  • Hands-on knowledge of control valves, pressure/temperature/level instrumentation, and control logic.

  • Familiarity with Rosemount, Honeywell, Emerson, and Vega instrumentation.

  • Experience with DCS and PLC systems.

  • Strong understanding of analyzer systems and troubleshooting methodologies.

  • Proficient in MS Office, MS Project, and SAP.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and manage multiple projects/issues simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in a relevant engineering discipline.

  • 8+ years of manufacturing experience.

  • Familiarity with extruders, temperature control systems, VFDs, and material conveyance systems.

  • Experience in both production and maintenance engineering.

  • Strong analytical and leadership skills.
